And What to Do Instead
A lot of people work very hard training their dogs.
They watch videos.
Go to classes.
Practise cues.
Use treats.
But sometimes nothing seems to work.
And the reason is often much simpler than people realise.
The missing piece is safety.
When dogs do not feel safe:
- their body becomes tense,
- their nervous system becomes stressed,
- and their behaviour changes.
This is especially common on walks.
If a dog feels trapped, pressured, restricted, or overwhelmed, their brain switches into survival mode.
And survival always comes before learning.
That means the dog is not thinking:
“How do I obey?”
They are thinking:
“How do I cope?”
This is why some dogs:
- bark,
- lunge,
- pull,
- or completely ignore commands.
Not because they are bad dogs.
But because they do not feel safe enough to learn.
At CEWS, we focus on building safety first.
We do this through:
- stable walking systems,
- better body positioning,
- smoother movement,
- and more predictable walking experiences.
When safety improves, amazing things start happening.
Dogs often become:
- calmer,
- softer,
- more focused,
- and easier to teach.
Their attention improves because their nervous system is no longer fighting to survive.
That’s why you don’t train safety.
You create it.
And once safety is present, learning becomes much easier.
So, if training hasn’t worked yet, don’t assume you need to try harder.
You may simply need to start deeper.
CEWS: Calm is designed, not trained.
